Chapters 3-4 questions " A Lesson Before Dying"

Chapter 3

1. Henry's insistence that Jefferson "did it" redirects the plot narrative since Henry assumes that Jefferson is guilty and due to the fact that Jefferson was responsible for his actions during the crime scene.


2. At this point, Miss Emma pushes Grant to go, also Grant states that, " She was looking at me but not seeing me, and not meaning what she was saying, either" implying that she will not view Grant as  the same for a period of time.


3. The backdoor of Henry Pichot's plantation symbolizes Grant farewell when he went off to college
and that he promised that he'll never enter the servant's entrance of Pichot ever again. Grant also took a flashback on how he felt back then when young and how things had never changed towards him.

4. Miss Emma prevail on Henry Pichot to speak to the sheriff on her behalf by wanting somebody to take her place because she knew that as an African American that she wouldn't stand a chance to convince the sheriff.


Chapter 4

1. The description of Bayonne echoes and expands on the public defender's summation in Jefferson's trial by emphasizing the comparison of Jefferson and a hog and how they were going to slaughter Jefferson as if he was a hog.


2. Several times throughout the novel the narrator expresses the need to get away from the town where he lives. The narrator feels compelled to leave flee and is kept on a urge to leave because one he has to teach Jefferson how to die as an man and secondly, because of his girlfriend Vivian.
